Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission file uses the approved submissions template.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • All illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

All submissions should use the approved template found here.

All successful submissions will be written in English using the American Psychological Association (APA) 7th edition style. For more assistance with APA 7th edition, the author can refer to the APA Style website at If papers are not submitted in APA style, they will be returned without review. Additional formatting guidelines that are specific to JOHE are explained here.

The manuscript should be submitted in Microsoft Word .docx format. Tables and figures must be formatted using Microsoft Word using the table/chart formatting tools so that any text within them is selectable. Figures and tables should appear after the paragraph they are first called out in the article. If a table/figure was not created by the author, it is the author's responsibility to obtain permission to reprint it in JOHE and provide the necessary documentation to the Editor.

The recommended manuscript size is no more than 10-12 pages in length, but the journal may consider up to 25 pages as needed (this includes the title page, references, appendices, etc.). All manuscripts require an abstract that should be no more than 250 words. Around 3-5 keywords that best describe the article should also be included.

Unpublished manuscripts are preferred but previously published manuscripts may be accepted with appropriate permissions.

No fees are assessed to authors or readers for any article submission, article processing, article publication, or article access.

Peer-Reviewed Articles

The Journal of Online Higher Education uses a double-blind peer-review process. The editorial staff takes every possible measure to ensure article author and article reviewer information remains anonymous throughout the process. Each peer-reviewed article is reviewed by a minimum of two peer-reviewers before a manuscript decision is made. Peer-reviewers are selected from both internal and external candidates. Articles that are peer-reviewed are clearly marked in the article heading.

Manuscripts shall be reviewed by two to three experts who will evaluate whether the manuscript is sound and coherent, whether it duplicates already published work, and whether or not the manuscript is sufficiently clear for publication. Reviewers will also indicate how interesting and significant the research is. The editorial staff will reach a decision based on these reports and, where necessary, they will consult members of the Editorial Board.

Book Review

Book reviews are non-peer-reviewed articles that examine a book's overall merits and how it can benefit those in the field of online higher education.
