About the Journal
Independence University’s Journal of Online Higher Education (JOHE) seeks to present information and advance discussion in online instruction in higher education.
JOHE publishes articles quarterly on all aspects of online higher education principles and practices. The Journal welcomes articles from both scholars and practitioners working in the field of online higher education.
Topics covered include, but are not limited to:
- Distance education instructional models
- Higher education and adult learning
- Uses of technology
- Instructional design
- Scholarly or learning theory
- Emerging topics and trends in online learning and distance education
JOHE encourages multidisciplinary and applications-oriented submissions. Of particular interest to the journal is online instruction as it relates to the fields of Healthcare (including medical assisting, respiratory care, nursing, and health services management), Business (including accounting and business administration), Technology (including cybersecurity and networking, software and mobile apps development, information systems, and web design), Graphic Arts, and General Education.
The Journal of Online Higher Education (JOHE) is published by Independence University with immediate open access to its content. Users are permitted to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to full-text articles as long as it is for a lawful purpose. Open access removes cost barriers and promotes the exchange of knowledge to enrich the community served.
Articles published in JOHE are under Creative Commons License Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-ND 4.0) with copyright retained by the author. This license permits users to share and redistribute the material. Appropriate attribution credit must be given and the material cannot be remixed, transformed, built upon, or modified.
The Journal of Online Higher Education uses a double-blind peer-review process. The editorial staff takes every possible measure to ensure article author and article reviewer information remains anonymous throughout the process. Each peer-reviewed article is reviewed by a minimum of two peer-reviewers before a manuscript decision is made. Peer-reviewers are selected from both internal and external candidates. Articles that are peer-reviewed are clearly marked in the article heading.
Manuscripts shall be reviewed by two to three experts who will evaluate whether the manuscript is sound and coherent, whether it duplicates already published work, and whether or not the manuscript is sufficiently clear for publication. Reviewers will also indicate how interesting and significant the research is. The editorial staff will reach a decision based on these reports and, where necessary, they will consult members of the Editorial Board.
Conflict of Interest
The Journal for Online Higher Education is a peer-review journal. Authors and reviewers must refrain from any type of bias or favoritism.
Authors must notify the Editor of any potential conflict of interest with a prospective reviewer or editor. In the event a reviewer, author, or member of the editorial board becomes aware of a conflict of interest, he or she will notify the Editor immediately. An investigation will determine if the article continues in the review process.
Plagiarism and Misconduct
The Journal of Online Higher Education strives for the highest integrity of content.
Cases of plagiarism and misconduct will be handled and judged by the Editor on a case by case basis. A manuscript in the review process may be rejected or the author may be asked to rephrase or include direct quotations before publication. We reserve the right to issue a correction or a retraction of an article found to have plagiarism or misconduct after publication.
- Plagiarism and misconduct includes, but is not limited to:
- Copying, writing, or presenting another person’s information, ideas, or phrasing without citing the original source
- Self-plagiarism by using your own previous publications without proper citation
- Using images, charts, data, or ideas from another source without proper citation or permissions
- Data fabrication by changing or making up research data
- Improper attribution or contribution of manuscript authors
Manuscript Decision Appeals
Authors may appeal a decision on a manuscript rejection. The appeal must be filed with The Journal of Online Higher Education within two months of the manuscript decision. Send a rebuttal letter to the Editor including:
- A clear explanation of why you disagree with the decision
- A detailed response to any reviewers’ comments
The Editor will consider your appeal and respond with a decision. All appeals are handled on a case by case basis. The Editor’s decision is final and cannot be appealed. If the appeal is accepted, the Editor will determine if the manuscript will be accepted or conditionally accepted to receive an additional review or require further revision.
