Abstract

Student achievement, retention, and graduation rates are issues at the forefront of higher education.  Many students are ill prepared for the challenges of online learning and are plagued with personal issues that cause stress and anxiety, which can manifest in the classroom through poor interaction, poor engagement, and poor academic performance. Maladaptive behaviors and lifestyles exacerbate academic stress and lead students to drop out. It is critical that higher education institutions implement strategies to prepare knowledgeable students that can learn critical thinking, reasoning, and assessment and decision-making skills. Mindfulness is an important emerging concept in higher education and is a tool that students can use to take control and ownership of their personal issues and educational journey.
